For a kitchen in a Connecticut family home, design duo Vivian Lee and James Macgillivray collaborated with a local millworker Wayne Tobin. The appliances in the kitchen are from Miele, GE, LG, and Fisher & Paykel. Most of the light fixtures in the space are from Schoolhouse Electric, with the exception of the Minka ceiling fans.

There are two choices when designing cabinets for a kitchen that has a lower ceiling. You can either use 36" tall upper cabinets, which allows for crown molding to be used along the top or you can use 42" tall upper cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling without any molding.

Lighting Kitchen Countertops. Some of the most precise tasks in a kitchen take place on the countertops. Countertops at the perimeter of the room typically sit below upper cabinets, so the easiest way to light them is to install undercabinet lighting.. Keep in mind that many countertops have shiny surfaces, i.e. marble or granite, so a diffused light source is needed to avoid reflected glare.

With a little work and few basic skills, you can brighten a large or small kitchen design with fresh paint and new cabinet hardware.
