Hi, My kitchen has this polished granite-like backsplash. There is no apparent caulk where the backsplash meets the wall. I was thinking of applying silicone caulk at this joint to prevent water from getting behind the sink. Is there any reason to -not- to do this? Or is there another/better way to seal this gap?
Spray-on applications are the best if you have a countertop as well as the backsplash to cover, and when you are sealing the tile for the first time, ahead of the sink installation. If the sink and other components are already installed, use a paintbrush or roller to apply the sealer.
Use the spatula to load the grout float with grout. Spread the grout onto the tile by dragging the float across the tile at a 45 degree angle and along the wall at an angle. Then drag the float in the opposite direction (imagine creating an "X" on the wall. Push firmly to force the grout into the spaces between tiles.
When do you seal your grout? After you've installed new tile, you want to wait at least 48 to 72 hours for the grout to dry and cure. Your grout should be clean and dry and make sure the grout lines are cracked or chipped. If they are, then touch up the grout and then wait an additional 48 to 72 hours before you start sealing the grout.
If you are looking to keep the same color of your grout and avoid discoloration, then use a penetrating sealer. A membrane forming sealer may change the color of your grout. In addition, penetrating sealer is great for this application because it cleans up well and helps to protect the grout from dirt.
